Welcome on the Marine Megafauna Conservation Organisation (MMCO)

The  MMCO is an Accredited  Observer of the International Whaling Commission

The aims and objectives of MMCO, are the surveys, studies and protections of large endangered marine creatures. MMCO mainly focuses on Whales, Turtles and Sharks in Mauritian waters. Its objective is to sensitize fishers, marine operators and local communities about the importance of protecting and respecting these creatures.

MMCO has started since 2011, to study the population of resident Sperm Whales and also migrating Humpback whales visiting our waters from May till October each year.

Maubydick project is a current study on Sperm whales to determine the dynamics of the population of Sperm Whales around Mauritius. Maubydick project is undertaken with the collaboration of the Ministry of Fisheries, the Mauritius Film Development Corporation (MFDC), Label bleu Production (France), Longitude 181 (France) Exagone (France) and Megaptera France and individual volunteers namely Vanessa Mignon from Australia.

Protection of Whales of Mauritius Project initiated in 2020 after mass death of more than 50 Melon Headed Whales in the east cost of Mauritius is a project of surveying the general population all cetaceans  around Mauritius.

We rely on eco-tourists or eco-volunteers to fund our project and go out at sea to collect photo and video data for surveying purposes.
